Hello everyone & welcome back to the 49 and Market blog.
For today’s project, I had the absolute pleasure of working with the gorgeous new Echoes of Time collection by Joanne Bain. This line has such a timeless, elegant feel, and I knew it would be perfect for experimenting with texture and depth on a mixed media layout.

I began by creating a bold, layered background using stencils paired with 49 and Market inks. I blended shades of Cappuccino, Lavender Kisses & Off the Rails, allowing the colours to blend & create a unique background. This panel became the heart of my design and I placed it right at the centre of the layout to ground everything.

To add drama and contrast, I tore strips of black cardstock and adhered them to either side of the central panel. The rough, torn edges gave an organic feel and helped frame the softer background beautifully. From there, I leaned into the mixed media process, decorating the black cardstock with irresistible rub on transfers that seemed to almost glow against the dark surface.

Texture paste added another dimension, bringing raised patterns and tactile interest to the design. To finish, I tucked in die cut elements, laser cut elements & chipboard from the Echoes of Time collection, layering them strategically to guide the eye across the page. The combination of delicate imagery and bold black elements made the layout both balanced and full of character. My photo added the perfect place to add some larger of the die cut elements to create a photo mat & bring the design together.

This project reminded me how rewarding it is to mix structured design with spontaneous play. Every layer, colour, and texture worked together to create a layout that feels deeply personal while celebrating the artistry of Joanne Bain’s collection.
