Hello, 49 and Market Friends,
I absolutely love working with 49 and Market papers — they are always so beautiful and inspiring, making it easy to complement them with decorative elements. Their stunning designs set the perfect foundation for any project.
But now, with the incredible new dye inks developed in collaboration with Ranger, creating on white backgrounds has become even more exciting and effortless. These inks blend so beautifully that it’s simple to build unique backgrounds that perfectly match the tones and themes of the collections.
For this layout, I used the Botanical Buzz collection to document the memories of an unforgettable trekking experience at Cotopaxi National Park, in Ecuador. The soft yellows, natural textures, and botanical elements from the collection were the perfect match for the scenic photos and the peaceful feeling of that day.
To create a custom background, I first prepped the white cardstock with white gesso, which helped to control the absorption of the inks. Then, I applied the dye inks directly to the page and sprayed water over them to achieve a soft watercolor effect. I gently dabbed the excess with a paper towel and used a heat tool to dry everything. The colors I used were Daffodil, Green Jean, Arctic Blitz, and Cappuccino — they blended together beautifully, adding depth and atmosphere to the background.
As an extra detail, I used a hexagon-shaped ephemera piece as a stencil and applied the Daffodil ink with a blending tool, creating a soft shadow effect that adds structure and interest behind the embellishments.
To elevate the background even more, I used the gorgeous rub-ons from the collection — they add delicate texture and visual interest without adding bulk. I love how they seamlessly melt into the page, becoming part of the design.
I also used laser cuts and frame covers to give extra dimension and focus to the photos, making them truly stand out. Elements like flowers, bees, hexagons, and wooden textures add charm and storytelling to the layout.
