Hi friends,
It’s Rebecca here, and I’m so excited to share my very first layout using Dennis Bruton’s Rust & Revs 2.0 collection! As a mum to a son, I always have an endless supply of ‘boy’ photos and sometimes they cry out for a masculine collection—and this one hits the mark. Just like with the original Rust & Revs collection, I couldn’t wait to dive in, and I’m loving every moment of creating with it!

For this layout, I knew I wanted to play with triangles, so I started by cutting my photo into a large triangle shape. I then chose three patterned papers that echoed the colours in the photo and cut them into various-sized triangles using a set of metal nesting dies—an absolute time-saver!
I spent some time arranging the triangles, experimenting with different compositions until I found one that felt just right. Once happy with the layout, I adhered the triangles together to keep everything in place. This makes it much easier to move the design on and off the page when working in layers or adding mixed media.
To make the photo stand out, I mounted it on white cardstock for contrast against the darker tones. I also added a second, deeper-toned mat behind it to enhance the contrast even more.

I love a bold title, and chipboard phrases are my go-to! The Chipboard Set has so many great options that can be mixed and matched for longer titles—so versatile. I chose “Fearless” and placed it just beneath my photo. I love how the white border around the letters ties in perfectly with the white photo mount.

With my triangles, photo, and title in place, it was time to embellish. I turned to the Laser Cut Elements and Die-Cut Elements and picked out several icons that complemented the photo’s theme. I especially loved using the grass elements to extend the grassy area in my photo, helping it blend naturally into the layout.

Once everything was secured, I focused on the background. I tested a few different shades from the Solids pack but decided that a smooth white cardstock would work best to let the mixed media shine.
Using a mini brayer, I lightly applied Distress Inks in ‘Unchartered Mariner’ and ‘Black Soot’. I worked in layers, adding just a little ink at a time to avoid overwhelming the paper. The result? A wonderfully grungy, textured effect that adds so much character.

To finish the layout, I added some Rub-On Transfers. I went for the black ink splatter designs to echo the darker tones in my photo and add just the right touch of drama to the background.
